Long week-end in September brought Sonia sailing with us for a couple days,
As well as the sunshine.(I think Sonia brought it with her from Vancouver)
A beautiful cruise down to Victoria with Sonia and Michael Meredith.
Sailing,
fishing ,crabbing swimming .......
Great starry nights...
All the fun summer stuff.
Such a pleasant trip and yummy food.
Just too short........

Point No Point

I know,people will say :"What's the point ?"
But George and I took a little excursion to Point No Point Resort
to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary.
We went by Cowichan Lake Road , an old logging road now all paved.

Just a beautiful drive.Great in the Audi.
The Resort is soooo romantic,waterfront with individual cabins and private hottub.

The Restaurant on site had the most delicious food and view (with binocular provided for every table)
A great getaway!

Sailing with Sophie

Well the weather did not want to cooperate but we left as planned anyway.
After shopping for provisions and filling up the boat , we went to spend the night at .
Newcastle Island.

We then sailed to Deep Bay to anchor overnight.

Another night in beautiful Gorge Bay.
Alone in the anchorage.

Then to Campbell River to pick up Sonia for the week-end
Celebrating Xmas in July.
We haven't been together for a year and a half.Fantastic.

Not much wind but lots of rain.......

Overnighting in Small Inlet and Octopus Island.
Both gorgious spots.........

Finally some sunshine....

I came for Sophie's Graduation and the Sunshine showed up !

A nice Brunch chez Myriam in her brand new house à St-Jean -sur -le -Richelieu

Bruno came to join me on Sunday for a lobster dinner in Sophie's little backyard.What a pleasure.

Then thanks to Aurélien we drove to Chicoutimi to see Grand-Maman et Lucie , Gaël ,Thomas ....

We decided of a little visit to Victoria to see George's brother Al and some friends...
What a week-end.
We've got lucky enough to have SUNSHINE !!!!

Neck Point

Well,today was a first !
My first time ever to Neck Point !
A beautiful Park in Nanaimo.
Windy cool winter day..
But no rain,so, just perfect !
It was also our first evening at the Symphony
with the new conductor :Pierre Simard (a cousin????)

Both activities quite enjoyable !

New Year's Square Dance and Mini-Concert

It's been a very busy time in Québec,and the New Year started with a bang.
Champagne at midnight with the whole family ,minus George.(still in Australia)(too bad)
An evening filled with well wishes (enough for a whole year and more)
On the Sunday,Sonia and I got to enjoy a mini-concert with La Guardia Nueva
in my sister's living room.(Sonia does their design)
That night ,my brother rented a hall ,musicians friends of his (sisters)and a caller.
We danced for three hours ,multiple square dances......under their beautiful music
Super Fun for all that attended.
What a fabulous way to bring in the New Year.
It's been such a busy holiday that I think that everyone is relieved that it's over now.

Got to Bagotville with a little delay,not to bad .
And all my luggage got here with me.Yé.
As I was walking into the Airport (the size the Nanaimo one)
Wondering if somebody would be there or
if I needed a taxi, I saw 14 people in a line , with their Santa 's hat

All there to pick me up.What a Merry Christmas!!
We had a little lunch at Christine's then we all went home.
Christmas Day itself was spent again at Christine
for the few of us that did not have in-laws to go to.
We had a fabulous Tea tasting Party followed by
a delicious meal.(naturally)
Boxing Day was the Big get together,we were about 22.
We did an exchange of edible presents.
Fantastic fun.
Monday ,a day with Bruno.Lunch,bookstore
Café Cambio,dinner with the family.
Yesterday was lunch with Lucie and Denis,then afternoon
with Sophie and dinner with Sonia ,Sophie and Gaël at
the St-Hubert.
Today was Winter Games Day at Lucie's.
Beautiful sunny day and a ride in a sleigh.
Huge Turkey Dinner and Snow Pudding.
WHat a great Christmas Holiday !!!

Toquarth Bay

George came to Tofino for a couples days !
My only days off ( I have been working overtime)
.We decided to go explore Toquarth Bay

A turn off by Kennedy Lake in Tofino.
Good thing we had the truck .Those logging roads
would not be too gentle on my Audi.

Beautiful scenery.Fresh clams and fresh oysters !
We had some pasta dinner with Chanterelles Mushrooms,
Fresh Clams
Italian Wine

"MOTHERLOAD" as they say.

Some goodbyes are so hard ,because they are so final.
This is one of those.
I had the great fortune to have met and worked with these two
wonderful people.
Their lives were caught short by such a senseless tragedy.
They will never be forgotten because of the mark that they left
in so many lives.
Thinking about their compassion and caring for others, brings
peace to my soul.

Boat Turkey !!!

We sailed to Vancouver for Thanksgiving.
A little rough for me....
The wheather wasn't so good on Saturday morning.
Winds,waves and rain.
A little chewable gravol and a nap helped a lot.

So,in order to fit the turkey in the boat oven,
George had to cut it in pieces......
(the oven is really tiny!!)
The turkey pieces were soaked in a brine ,
(George's new recipe book from the girls)
And it was absolutely delicious.
Sonia made roasted brussel sprouts (A recipe
made famous by her cousin Alexandre)
And Edan brought beets and pumpkin pie .

Naturally there was the famous macaroni and
cheese,a tradition passed on by Granpa Jack!
All in all ,a great feast!
Sunday morning we had a late breakfast on
deck with a brilliant sun.(it was unbelievably warm)

Sitting there beside Granville Island and sipping
our coffee on the boat, gave a fantastic spin to a delightful
Thanksgiving week-end.....

Sonia and I manage to fit a little shopping on
Granville Street in the afternoon (sooo fun)
and then we met George at OUISA .
A Louisianna style restaurant
near her appartment ,for a cajun meal.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
(And Sophie,we missed you so much X0X0)

PS:In Vancouver,on the monday of Thanksgiving,they have the TURKEY TROT,a 10 Km run
to raise money for the food bank (and help shed the extra turkey pounds)

Desolation Sound

Drove to Comox to meet George on Electre and we made our way to Desolation Sound.
Not much wind . A little stop around Mitlenatch for a swim in the ocean (not for me !!)
And catching some rays....
Made our way to Galley Bay for the night and did a circle around Redonda Island
with a stopover at the entrance of Toba Inlet...
Then another night in fabulous Prideaux Haven,Sooooo "magnifique"
Rainy day motoring to Powell River and a breakfast visit with "little" Erin and Harper.....

All in all a great fall gateway...

My brother came for a visit this week !

What a treat !

We got to see Sonia (and Edan and Matt) in Vancouver .

Plus had breakfast Rendez-vous with Ian.Great!

We then visited friends of Bruno in Maple Ridge
where we spent the night.( Denis ,Jacqueline and
Sophie)
We made it to the Ferry in the rain.But the Sunshine
appeared as soon as we got close to the Island.
So we went on the Waterfront for ice cream....
And to check out the Candy Store downtown.
And visited Sarah and family at the Rondalyn
Camground that evening...

On thursday,while going to a Farm in South Willington we found tons of blackberries on the side of the beautiful country road....

Bruno was hard to pull away from the bounty......
We then had a beautiful breakfast...
The deers came for a visit in the afternoon in the
front yard.
The official photographer of the trip (Bruno)
took a few shots..
Then evening at the movie ,but we were too late for our first choice .
Oh Well ,such is life.

Julie ,Eric and Laurent dropped by our house for a quick vist
on their way to Horby Island. (they had just crossed Canada
by car.

Saturday ,under a brilliant sunshine ,we drove to Qualicum on our way to Tofino.
After a beautiful coffee break on the beach we drove thru Cathedral Grove and got
rained on the mountain pass.

Bruno got to drive my car all week on the excuse that he was my favorite brother.
Which he is since he is my only one,
After checking out Ucluelet and taking in some dinner at Delicados.
We got treated to a great sunset on our arrival to the condo.
I had to work on Sunday (8 til 8) at the ho
spital while Bruno explored
Tofino in the sun.
We enjoyed some fabulous sushi after work and finally met Crazy Ron.
Back in time on monday to enjoy a lunch with Julie,Eric and Laurent in Nanaimo.
Super.
Then up in time on tuesday to drop Bruno at the float plane and drive to Tofino for
a nap and the night shift.....

Lucky me !!!

Perfect Summer Day

Beautiful summer day.
Coffee and breakfast in the swing.
Then we left on the motorcycle for
an afternoon drive .
Stopped at the Cedar Market bought
some plants(but left them with the
lady because we could not carry them
on the bike !!!).
Discovered a new and super cute little
Park by the Ocean,then on to Ladysmith.
Huge party on the beach .Fish and chips
and live music.
came home for a little rest and then for
dinner at The Rendez-Vous with a live
Jazz Musicien.Who can ask for anything more.........

Ah! Finally ,it is time for Summer Sailing Break....
We only have 5 days...
George came to pick me up in Tofino after my night .
I had a short nap at home and we left around 4 PM.
Overnight in Kulleet Bay near Yellowpoint.
Crab trap in the water= 0 crab
Beautiful lazy sunny morning then sailed our way
thru Sansum Narrows.The winds were almost a
little much for me...
We anchored outside of Cowichan Bay (before the
village)Tranquil night.
Shower on deck in the morning sun.
Crab trap= 1 crab (too small)thrown back
Going to anchor in the Bay.
Visit the beautiful little village of Cowichan Bay.
Great bakery,delicious cheeses...
Afternoon going down the Koksilah River
in the dinghy.
as suggested in the Cruising Guide of
Vancouver Island.
So peaceful....
Filet mignon on the BBQ and good wine...
Crab Trap = 6 crabs 4 keepers .Yé !

Delightful dinner that night anchored
in Whaleboat Park
off Ruxton Island...Fresh Crabs and fresh corn..
Rough and stormy night at anchor.

Came back in Nanaimo for the
start of the Bathtub Race.

I just love summer sailing......

Summer Drive to Tofino

Summer drive to Tofino...
Port-Alberni near 38 degree !!!!
Too hot for me (also I had not yet figure out
the air conditioning in the new car)
My stop to Starbucks for a Tazo Ice Tea was short live
since the ice melted in 2 seconds in that HEAT !!!
Anyway,beautiful drive to Tofino with the wind
in my hair...
It's at least a good 10 degree less in here.(25)
Got to put my toes in the soft sand of Long Beach.
Soooo nice!
Coconut prawns for dinner
and a glass of wine on the little red chair....
Mmmmm That's the life!!

Little Goat on the Roof

My friend Normande is visiting from Prince George.
I really think she came to Nanaimo to bring the Summer.
The weather has just been FANTASTIC!
The last time she came to the Island I lived in Victoria.
We explored the Nanaimo waterfront with a lunch on
Protection Island.
We went to a play at the Chemainus Theatre.
And yesterday we saw Cathedral Grove and did a little
shopping at the Coombs Market with its goats on the Roof.
Bought some carrot ginger soup, some delicious cheeses
and some Drunken Beans....

Sunday was mom and daughter day.
We went to feast our eyes at the Public Market.
We shopped for some herbs for our planter and
looked at a million beautiful flowers.
We ended up buying a peach color begonia for indoor.
It was warm and muggy (already !!!) around 25 degree.
We sat in the mini backyard repotting and planting.
Garlic Roasted chicken for dinner with Leah and Vincent
and a good french canadian movie to finish the evening.
Lets not forget the famous Crème Brulée au Chocolat
et Fraises that Sophie whipped up after dinner.

I just drove from Tofino to Nanaimo this morning and
was surprise to see fresh snow on the Pass.Brrrrr !
I was glad to still have my snow tires on ,
even if the road was bare.(thanks my love)

Lunch with Helen at Urban Beet,she is going
to France in a month.I told her I have to come with

George and I went downtown on the
waterfront to visit our friend Tony on
his new fishboat.There was nobody at
the boat so went to eat fish and chips
on the warf at Trollers.(Open only on

George thought that it was pretty and he was
happy because he said that we missed the
winter while we were down in Australia !!!

Dine Around and Stay in Town Victoria

Yes,it is that time of year again !!!
Tourism Victoria brings these fantastic deals on Hotels and Restaurants
in Victoria every year around the end of February.
You can stay in the most beautiful Hotels for a quarter of the price
and enjoy a 3 course meal for a fixed low price.(20$-30$)
This year,we've enjoyed our stay at the Sidney Pier Hotel and Spa
and a very nice dinner at The Haros Restaurant.
So this morning after a delicious breakfast at the 3rd Street Cafe
we did some shopping at our favorite Sidney Shops.
Mine the Cameron Rose gifts and Cards and George spends hours at
the second hand marine store.I love Sidney.

Vancouver Olympics 2010

George and I went for a walk on the Waterfront this afternoon in the sunshine.
Absolutely beautiful and sooooo warm.
For the first time since I have lived here,I felt a bit sad that it was so warm and
sunny for February ( 12 degree)because of the Olympics !!!!

Sydney

Got to Sydney around 8 PM last night.
Hotel was in Darling Harbour next to the Chinatown.
We found a fabulous sushi place for dinner.
Warm and muggy in Sydney.
This morning we asked our airport taxi driver to take us
downtown to see the Famous Sydney Opera House.(photo op )
We are now in Air New Zealand Lounge awaiting our flight home.

Again , what a life !!!!

Perth and Fremantle

We planned to leave for Fremantle after George's work on Saturday and have dinner there but he was on a fire all day and didn't get home before 8:00.
We left anyway and grab some fast food at Red Rooster.Got there around 11:00 in a nice hotel downtown.
In the morning we visited the Market,then breakie then on the waterfront for the Maritime Museum.
To Perth in the afternoon,a visit in Kings Park,some food and beers at the Royal Perth Yacht Club
then a visit downtown and chinese food dinner with the Perth Gang'n. (there is another team in Perth)

We are flying for Sydney this morning....See you all soon

PIZZA NIGHT IN PARADISE

Phil decided that we had to see some Australians Movies to enriched our culture.
So he rented The Castle (Typical Australian Family) and The Dish (The Australian
dish that transmitted the image from the walk on the moon to earth )
We used the little movie theatre at the campground to view those two movies.
We also decided to order some pizza.Just Fantastic !!
The girls got back from Perth last night and brought some champagne with them.
They also had some hibiscus flowers in syrup that you put at the bottom of your
glass and when you pour the champagne over it,the bubbles make the flower
open up.How beautiful is that !!!! (like my new friend Sharon would say)
That makes me want to sing the Tiny Bubbles Song.......
Makes me HAPPY !!!

Lake Caves

George and I took the day off to go visit some new beaches
and caves.
Surf Point Beach was hosting competition of Sail Surfing.
Quite spectacular ! So windy ! Those guys are crazy !
But super entertaining to watch.
We then went down the Coast for a tour of one of the caves.
There are quite a few in the region.It was hard to choose.
It was very impressive.Sooo beautiful....Also 300 steps down
and naturally 300 steps up.One of the american on the tour
did not look midway up.(I got a bit worry)
But he made it back safely.
We then visited a Karri Forest and stopped at a Brewery
for some beer battered fries and a cold one.
The guys were giving a speech at the Lions Club in the evening.
I stayed home and finished some of our leftover.Our trip is
quickly coming to a end.

The girls are in town !!!!

Sharon,Jenny,Baby Pia and I went to the lavender farm
to try their skin products,their lavender ice cream
and their mousse cake.Mmmmmm!Delish !!
We also went to try some Port and some coffees
at a beautiful winerie.
Bought some local produce at a little deli shop and then we went for a Pizza and Champagne Lunch
at the Colonial Brewerie Co.(little thin crust pizza
like in Spain)Jenny and I got a little FUZZY after
the afternoon champagne..........

Valley of the Giants

George took a couple of days off and we went to visit further south.
(which here means colder weather)We went to Walpole and the Valley
of Giants,nice tall trees.They have a walkway around the tree tops.
It's absolutely beautiful.We stayed overnight in a little cabin in the
countryside,very private and the Roos came for a visit on the lawn
at dusk.(5 of them)
It was Australia Day so there was celebrations in the village.Sheep
sheering,outdoor market and the famous lamb on a bun lunch.
Breathtaking beaches and great wineries.
Another day in paradise.

Saturday Sailing

George gave his name at the Yacht Club on friday to see
if they needed crew for the Regatta on Saturday.(his day off)
He got a call friday night and got to sail all afternoon
in Geographe Bay.he was so so HAPPY.They've asked him to come back...
He even said that I should look up for a job at the local hospital
so I would be the one playing and I'd be the one working.....

(Not such a good idea from my point of view....)

Ice Cream Truck

We moved from our 5 star resort to a little cabin on a campground.
Two days ago I was on the balcony and I heard the Ice Cream Truck
playing Green Leaves.It's called Whippy ! (How cute is that!)
I went to take a picture and decided to stand in line with all the little children!!!!

(Why not?) I got caught because Phil's wife came with her two year old!!!!

Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group

The Volunteer Marine Group took me with them for one of their exercise.
They let me drive their boat for a while.(Lots of power!)
We dropped a target in the water and a plane from Perth flew over for their exercise.
They were practising dropping rescue packages close to the target.
We spent the afternoon on the water.Then all went to the base for a drink.

I think that I am now on the list of Volunteer !!!!!

Flying High

On monday morning I went on an hour flight to Augusta and back with one of the forestry
workers who likes flying as a hobby.
Magnificent view of the coast.
I was right , there is miles and miles of white sand beaches.
The water is a beautiful turquoise (pour Sonia)
Lots of good surfing places.
What a treat !!

Busselton Festival

This past week-end was the Busselton Festival in town.
We live about 5 km from the little town .
In the morning,I went to the base to have breakfast on the
BARBIE with the guys.Delicious ! Their BBQ are more like
a giant hot plate.(easier for eggs and hashbrowns)
Then I rode to town to see some of the shows on the waterfront.
It felt like Canada Day on the waterfront in Nanaimo.
Acrobate,folk singers,belly dancers ect...
Fun afternoon.

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is situated on the extreme south west point of Australia.
It is where the Indian Ocean meets the South Ocean.
Nice ride down to Augusta.(the town adjacent to the lighthouse)
Cold and windy on the Beach.

Lunch at the lighthouse and then we returned via the forest.

Pelican

A few days ago,I was sitting on the beach reading, and when I lifted my eyes
from my book there was a pelican next to somebody fishing on the shore.
It was HUGE and not afraid of people.
Everytime the fisherman caught a little fish,he would give it to the Pelican.
So the bird sat quietly behind the fisherman and waited.

Bicycle

Last night ,George came home with a bicycle.
I get to use it when he is at work.
What a treat.There is a bike path
all the way to town.I got a bit excited
today and cycle for two hours.
The day was a bit too hot and the seat
too hard.I didn't feel so good coming back.
I ran out of water to drink...
Oh well ,I'm all better now.
I 've got to go to the store tomorrow to get a

Kangaroo

The kangaroo or ROO as they say down here,
are as numerous as our deers.
As soon as you drive away from town,they are
all over in farmer's fields.
When I first got here,I thought that I would make
a wish if I saw one .Well, now I have made about
50 wishes so far !!!!
The worst part is that everybody likes to eat
" Skippy".
I haven't had the heart for it yet...

Sunny today ,about 28 degree,and windy.
The nights dipped at about 10 degree in the last
few days(that's the weather in Vancouver right now)
Which makes our sleep very comfortable.
We have not use our air conditioned in the last week.
Very comfortable in the shade.

Girls Day Outing

Yesterday we did a girlsday outing.
Sharon ,Jenny and Pia (baby) took
me with them to tour Margaret River
wineries and Galleries.
We started at 10 to do wine tasting.!!!!!
What a life!
We also stopped for coffee and decadent
cheesecake.
More wineries ,a brewery and the famous
Chocolate Factory......
Those ladies are so much fun that I felt
like I was with sisters...
They are both going back to Perth this morning
but coming back later in the month.
The funny part is that they are both NURSES

We went to the most fabulous beaches.

Fine mist in the morning and the smell of eucalyptus
from the balcony.
I started my day with a visit at the Gallery .
Jenny ,the artist en residence come from the UK
and does fabulous work.
Then a walk along the endless beach......
I could have done that for hours but I was told to
be careful in the sun so
I came back to the hotel for a second
breakfast and café.
Then did some laundry for George
( he is the one working you know !)
Later i sat in the shade by one of the pool
and around 4 went to the beach again.
Before dinner we moved to a kitchenette suite at the 5 stars hotel.
Dinner with the whole crew in one of the room (Lasagna)
And an early night.

I left Vancouver at midnight and promptly fell asleep until 7 AM.
I have not slept well in the past few days.Too excited !!!!!
The two young ladies beside me were just coming back from
Vancouver visiting their parents for 3 months.They both said that
they wished they could have stayed longer..(father an ingeneer
on contract for a year in Vancouver)
It's was a 15 hour non-stop flight !!! My BUM and my right leg were
NUMB when we landed in Sydney.
I missed the connecting flight to Perth so I got to wait 5 hrs
before my next flight (I think it is the same length of time
as Vancouver -Montréal 5 to 6 hours flight ) Just enough time to
numb the other leg !!!!! HA ha ha...
Hot , humid and sunny.Some people have all the luck!!!
They spray the inside of the plane before we disembark in Sydney .
There was also a sniffing dog at the luggage carrousel.
But they don't care about liquids on the domestic flight...
Go figure...
In Vancouver they made me take my scarf off (in case I had sewn
explosive in it ,but I got to keep my underwear on.. )C'est la vie.

Departure for Australia

Well,I woke up this morning in Nanaimo
and the fog was as thick as on Boxing Day !!!!
So my planed flight from Nanaimo got canceled.
My dear friend Lois drove me to the Duke Point Ferry
Thank you Lois !!!!You save the day !! (And what a pleasant
trip it was)
I got to the Airport early and Sophie met me at the check-in counter
(she is leaving for Montréal tonight)
We are now at the Maple Leaf Lounge enjoying a snack and a drink .
(Thanks for the passes Daddy.) Sophie is like a kid in Dysneyland !!!

Saturday,we visited Alfama (just to the right of the appartment.)
Churches and Castello.
Beautiful view of the river and the town.
We had lunch in a delicious Indian restaurant .
Fabulous Samosa and Chai tea.
Yesterday,after jumping the fences for the train,
we walked the Waterfront to Belem.
Again another sunny day with Sushi on the water for lunch,
Outside in the sunshine .Mmmmm!!!
Today we are taking the metro to the site of Expo98 to visit
the Oceanorium and another waterfront.
Tomorrow is departure day via Frankfurt...

Lisboa

We left the apartment this morning
and on our way to the market,there was
an open air concert by the Naval Orchestra.
After listening to a couple songs,we made our way
to the market thru the narrow streets of Lisboa.
We got some garlic,tomatoes and gambas for
a little lunch feist with some Vinho Verde.
We are renting a cute little apartment in the
heart of Baixa.
It even has a little clothesline of the kitchen....
Tonight we are going to a Concert of Duo
Violino Acordeao playing some Astor
Piazzolla which I discovered a couple summers
ago with my brother.

We left Lisbon yesterday,going North toward Porto.
We did not get he beaches and the cliffs are fabulous.
So we are always stopped on our way.
We made it to Peniche,a little gem of a place with a
very cute and quiet hotel accross from the light house in
the middle of nowhere.
A little detour by Fatima today and back on the Coast for the night .
A waterfront little hotel at Figueras de Foz watching the surfers from our balcony.
I think George was tempted to go join them....
Hopefully ,Porto tomorrow.

walking to Cascais

So, after breakfast at the hotel,I go explore the sites of this beautiful waterfront town.
When the sun is shining,it is t-shirt weather....Just fabulous.
I walk around taking pictures,and then find myself a Patisseria and stop for coffee and a treat.
Then more exploring and some window shopping....
So far I haven't got lost.
There is beautiful walkway along the ocean that joined the two city (Estoril and Cascais)

My portugeese is not that great yet....But I am learning a little bit every day.

George and I landed in Lisbon last night where a taxi was waiting for us to take us to our hotel
in Estoril.
We are right accross the CASINO.!!!!!!
Made famous by the movie Casino Royale (James Bond).
We found a cute little restaurant for a late dinner and then we crashed for the night.
George is going for his interview this morning and for the next 3 days.
I tease him because today is suppose to be the PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST .
(and I am wondering if it is in Portugese ??????)
I am gonna go explore the city .
I am a couple blocks from the beach and I hear it is a famous beach for surfing !!!
It is on and off rain and about 16 degree.

Vancouver Airport

It is 5pm at Vancouver Airport.
I have not slept yet today since the end of my nightshift.
I feel a little bit GAGA.
I left my passport ,boarding pass and crossword puzzle
in the plane from Nanaimo !!!!!
Not a very good start.
After retrieving my passport, a bathroom break and a little soup,things are looking a bit better.
I will be completely unconscious for the flight to London

The Road to Tofino

Ok! Today was t-shirt day in Montréal with a

I took a long walk to Laurier St and Had coffee

The Theatre National with William Fallon.
(He is studying there!!!)Fun,fun !
He even gave us a tour of the place after the show.

Airport

The flight for Montréal was delayed.
So we got home much later than planned.
We did two stops on our way back and I
was flying with our little lady doctor who almost
threw up on the first landing.......
The stewardess couldn't even asked if there was
a Doctor on board!!!!!
She did the same on the two other landing.
Poor thing...
Sophie and I stayed up talking till almost two
o'clock.
Even after that I couldn't fall asleep.

School Parking

When Vanessa and I left for our walk yesterday,one of the doctor was needing help
to bring his kayak in the water.After helping him I made him give me an ETA,so I would
know when to start worrying.Well,I worried all day anyway (I find that it is just a little too
cold for this kind of sport.He came back a little cold at the end of the day,at the same
time at the BOYS (3 nurses)who went hunting this morning with their ATV at 5 in the
morning and caught a Cariboo....

I think we'll have some good steak very soon....

We also took Hans's dog with us.

H1N1

The vaccines for the H1N1 Flu will be arriving earlier than planned.
So I was asked if I could stay an extra week to help give the shots.
The staff booked for it will be coming in two weeks !!!!!
I don,t think I'll be able to stay since I am working in Tofino as
soon as I get back and I would like to see Sophie and my mom
before my return to Nanaimo.
The big wave of flu as not hit here yet but now there is a wave of
"SCABIES"..............

Transit

I am now in a Transit because the girl that I was replacing has returned.
It's a three bedroom basement suite and all the rooms are taken.
I am much closer to the river and enjoy a magnificent sunrise every day.

I am now in a new Transit with two other girl and I am stealing

When I go away,I always bring my Café Press Mug and
my soooo delicious Columbien Dark Roast Coffee from Java Expression.
Best coffee on the Island.
Well,this morning ,I am enjoying the last two cups of my supply.(I am very sad)
Outside , wind gust of 70 to 80 km,that makes the house shake
and make rumbling noises.....
Good thing I am nice and warm inside.

Water Truck

Because of the permafrost,the houses are build off the ground kind of on feet.
There is no outside pipes.
Between the walls of the 2 apartments where I live,there is 2 Tanks.
To fill and empty those thanks , there are some trucks.
The water truck fills up from the river just down the street from here
and comes around town filling up each houses with water.So needless to
say that we have to boil our waters .There is a little light that turns red inside the
apartment if we ran out of water (too bad so sad if it is a week-end)
When that happens you often have to wait for the regular water day !!!
There is also a sewer truck.Because there is another thank in the wall that collects
all the dirty water,toilet water included.Pretty smelly job.(really really bad smell)
Like 10 times worse than emptying the holding tank on the boat !!!!
When that tank is full,there is also a little red light that turns on inside to tell you
not to use water or the bathroom. (Not so pleasant)

That really makes you want to conserve water.
So, there is no laundry allowed from friday til monday (because there is no trucks on the week-end )
Count yourselves lucky..........

The Museum

There is this little building in town,that looks like an Igloo.
It is the town's Museum with sculptures and artefacts from
the village of Inukjuak.There was nobody there to give us the Tour.
But one of the nurse ,Jade, knew a lot about the Inuit's way of life.
She had some good stories to tell.

First Snow

It rained all week.Not too cold.(around 7 degree)
This morning the ground is all white.
The temperature is 0 . Our first snow.
I am so glad that I picked my cranberries yesterday (they are the size of Tic Tacs!! and right on the ground
like wild strawberries.)
Last night we had Cariboo next door at Sebastien 's.
His Cree girlfriend Sabina is visiting from Chibougamau
for a couple of weeks.She the one who cooked the Cariboo.
She cuts it in thin strips,
roll them in some flour and fry them in oil and butter.It was absolutely delicious.
She says it's the way her mom cooks it.
Tonight ,it's Thanksgiving dinner at my place.(That's why I went to pick my berries yesterday)
I think there will be a dozen people.Should be fun!
(Even if tomorrow ,it's back to work as usual )No long week-end for us.

Dinners with friends

Monday ,Karine,another nurse, didn't have any heat or water at her apartment.
She came over for dinner but didn't want to stay the night.
On tuesday,Karine bought a frozen pizza at the store and invited herself to my place
for dinner again,this time with Vanessa ,yet another nurse.Still no heat at her place.
Tonight we are all going to badminton to the school gym .
Then dinner at Vanessa after ....
Busy social life!!!
I think I'll make my homemade spaghetti sauce and have the girls over for thursday.
Mine is well keep the ball rolling.
Makes the time go fast.....

Golf Course??????

Ok,Sunday morning everybody is crammed in the little Anglican Church.
I am walking around a deserted town.I took the back road and to my surprise,
I saw a little yellow flag in the distance....After walking 10 minutes thru the
bog,there was a little bit of outdoor carpeting with a hole and a flag then looking
around ,I found a least 5 to 6 Golf little yellow flags !!!!!!!
All I need is a 5 Iron and a thousand balls because there is no way I can find any ball
in that terrain...Who knew ??????

Cranberries and Jellyfish

I went for an little exploration around the village,trying to find better view points
for pictures.I found litlle mini cranberries .I didn't have any countainer so I used my gloves.
(I had to wash them after because some of the little fruits got stuck in some of the fingers.)
Beautifull sunny day,very windy again,around 7 degree.

I came back by the beach and while I was taking pictures of jellyfish,I sank in the mud !!!
(Another thing for the wash !)
Mom said that she freeze the cranberries and eat them frozen with some honey on top.
I had a few of mine with can peaches,and last time,in Salluit I put some in my jello.

I've got to collect more for Thanksgiving next week-end......

De Retour au Grand Nord

George got back from Africa just in time to be sent away in the Okanagan for forests fires.

After a week away ,I went to join him in Kamloops.After 1 day and a half of + 30 it rained!!!!

So I kidnapped him .

We went to Naramata,Oliver and Osoyoos to try their wines....

Just a magical little impromptu holiday... it was also our Anniversary .

Electre

George and I took a little trip on Electre down to Victoria.

George had a flight test to do at the Airport.

I was left in Sidney for the afternoon

and loaded my bag at the second-hand book stores

We stayed a couple nights in Tod Inlet ,then on to Cadboro Bay

were Al (George's brother) and Judy came on board for a glass of wine

in the evening.

On Saturday we anchored at Browning Harbor (Pender Island)

Lots of eagles and 6 little otters frolicking about !!! Very cute.

Sunday night in Saltspring Island,weather was so so,time to catch up on some reading and napping.

Then home for George to get ready for another trip to Angola...

Canada Day

We went to the Vieux Port for Canada Day,

Another sunny and hot day in Montréal.

After a delicious 2 flavors Sorbet,we went to

an Archeological Museum build on old foundation

dating to the beginning of the City.

A little dinner at a Polish Restaurant in the Old Montréal,

Our waitress Carolina convinced us to try some Vodka.

(George had a shot and I tried some kind of martini

with apple juice and cinnamon) Good food .

Then home for some popcorn and CSI show with Sophie.

(Our legs were still tired from the day before !!!)

We then packed our bag for departure tomorrow.

The new girls are both from Montréal and did not

Sunday we had wild rice with curry chicken and ginger mixed vegetables

Last night was tortellini with a tomato sauce with red peppers,onions mushrooms,

zucchini ,squash,red beans,and pois chiche AU GRATIN with 5 kinds of cheeses Mmmmmmm!

Tonight ,our last dinner together (he is working evening shift till Friday,but promised me

Crêpes on Friday am) tonight he made some garlic chicken with basmati and another stir-fry veggie plate.

Fashion Show

We got invited to a Cree Fashion Show (outdoor).

Fabulous day,cloudy but about 25 degree.

Lots of people around and there is Geese being cooked all day

in the Teepee and also trouts.(It's like a sauna in there)

Quite a few elders were present.

I got some wonderful photos.After the Fashion Show,

They told us to go home to get a plate and come back

around 6 PM for the feast.

Tuesday was a great day.Last week of school.

Started with the vice -principal coming to the clinic to invite me

to talk to the student on the local radio station about how to deal

with the stress of exams ( we had a few fainting spells in the classrooms

last week in high school) and also talk to all the student about staying hydrated

during this warm stretch of weather ( 26 degree )

It was a fun thing to do (the radio station is just accross the street)

I don't know how I sounded like ???Gordon our host (DJ) was translating every thing

from English to Cree

My friend Dom came to school to take me for lunch at the hospital cafeteria.

He was leaving that afternoon and wanted to say good bye to everybody.

We had TACOS .

When I came back to school the computer tech came to set me up on the school

system,the printer and to give me my own laptop.As we talked ,he said that he

had relatives in BC in NANAIMO.

What a small world !!! We're all connected !!!

Later that day my boss Jane came to tell me that she was posting the job of school

When the big Hydro Project happened in the 70's ,the people of Chisasibi

were living on an island (the size of Gabriola or Ile au Coudre)on

La Grande Rivière (the Big River).

Quebec Hydro was afraid that the island would get flooded with the dams

so they moved everybody on the mainland,which is the village were I am working now.

So, today,Frédérique borrowed a canoe and we went to visit the island

who is somewhat kind of a ghost village.It was just fabulous.

Old buildings and great beaches all over.

The weather cooperated ,it was about 22 degree and sunny.

We got together also this evening for homemade

cheese fondu at Pascale,a friend of Frédérique.
